Nestled in the Southern Appalachian Mountains just south of Asheville, The North Carolina Arboretum offers acres of cultivated gardens and groomed trails featuring some of the most beautiful, botanically-diverse plants in the region.

For more than 30 years…Cultivating Connections between People, Plants and Places…amid a 434-acre public garden, The North Carolina Arboretum is located within the Bent Creek Experimental Forest just south of Asheville and adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 393. Surrounded and crisscrossed by forested coves and meandering creeks in the botanically diverse Southern Appalachian Mountains, The North Carolina Arboretum is set in one of the most beautiful natural settings in America.

The Arboretum was established as an affiliate of the University of North Carolina System by the State General Assembly in 1986, nearly a century after Frederick law Olmsted, the Father of American Landscape Architecture, first envisioned a research arboretum as part of his legacy and plan for George Vanderbilt at Biltmore Estate.

Maggie Bs Wine Shop.jpg
10 S Main St, Weaverville, NC 28787, USA

Maggie B’s is Weaverville’s first ever wine and specialty food store.   But, despite what most people think, Maggie B is not the owner. She is actually Elspeth and Andy’s 13-year old, yellow Labrador retriever. In her honor, we do offer dog parking outside, refreshments (water bowl), and doggie treats. So, if you’re just walking around downtown Weaverville, or getting ready to take your pooch on a hike, stop in and grab some treats for yourself and your four legged friend!

Maggie B’s sells wine, beer, meats, cheeses, wine accessories, and a little of everything else.  Sandwiches, salads, soup, and small plates are offered daily.  They also offer a great selection of wine and beer by the glass.  We carry wines from smaller vineyards that you are not going to find at the grocery store. The wines are from all over the world: South Africa, Argentina, France, New Zealand, and more. You will also find a wide selection of organic wines, which can be beneficial for people who have problems with the preservatives in wine.

In our deli cooler we have Sunburst Trout dip, Jalapeno Pimento cheese, and deli meats. Our cheeses consist of items such as triple cream bries, Aged Gouda, Parmigiano Reggiano, and a wide variety of local selections. We are a full service cheese counter, so how ever much you need we can cut it.

Maggie B’s also offers gift certificates, gift baskets, and shipping!

Don’t forget, we offer free wine and beer tastings every week. Our tastings are informative, fun, and non-intimidating. Our customers enjoy our tastings because they feel comfortable in a place where usually you will see someone you know, or meet someone new!

waffle housew.jpg

In 1955, two Georgia neighbors opened up a restaurant that would change the world. Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner were living in Avondale Estates, GA, when they decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant for their friends and neighbors, focused on people on both sides of the counter. That first restaurant opened the door to create the Waffle House brand that you see today.

As this movement began to expand, new restaurants were built in Georgia as well as neighboring states, and the “Yellow Sign” soon became a familiar landmark along city streets and interstate highways across the country. Today, the Waffle House system is more than 1,900 locations in 25 states. All open 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

But more than that, Waffle House has always been about the people Joe and Tom cared about in 1955 – our Associates and Customers. Waffle House was founded on the principals of providing the friendliest service in town, while also offering the opportunity for rewarding and quality careers. Today, Waffle House continues to provide great career opportunities for more than 40,000 Associates. These Associates are “Waffle House” to their Customers. They provide their Customers with a unique experience that keeps them coming back for more.

Whether you are a Waffle House Regular, or this is your first time experiencing our restaurant, we welcome you with open arms. You are now a part of our Waffle House Family!

“We aren’t in the food business. We’re in the people business.” – Joe Rogers, Sr.

Before we packed up and left our home in New York, we had been head chefs at two of the highest-rated restaurants in the Hamptons on the eastern end of Long Island, Robert’s in Watermill and World Pie in Bridgehampton.  Yet, all the while that we were running our respective kitchens, we kept a small fire burning for the dream of opening our own idea of a great restaurant someday.  Our plan was to find the most promising, picturesque town in the country, where the people were varied, smart, good-looking, and hungry for the kind of genuine culinary thing we do.

Hello, Weaverville.

If you recall, 2012 wasn’t the greatest year for risky business moves.  Back then, our hope was simply to survive.  But, in fact, we flourished.  And you made it happen.

Whether you are local or just visiting, a weekly regular or an occasional diner, we thank you for your patronage.  We also salute the unique community of area farmers and artisans who supply us with the freshest local ingredients–all the sustainable essentials needed to keep Glass Onion fulfilling the promise we made to customers from the start:  To provide simple, delicious meals (lunch & dinner), made strictly with the freshest, prime-quality ingredients, expertly prepared (that’s us), promptly served, and courteously priced.

Buon Appetito.

Hiking Through a Rhododendron Tunnel on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Craggy Gardens offers one of the most dramatic viewpoints on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stunning vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains stretch far into Tennessee to the west and toward central North Carolina to the east. These views can be enjoyed from the parking area near the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center and along nearby hiking trails.

A large picnic area is popular with visitors. On clear nights, Craggy Gardens is also a perfect place for stargazing.

In early summer, Craggy Gardens becomes a mountain-sized bouquet when the rhododendron thickets on the upper heights cover the landscape in pink and purple. A favorite hiking trail, Craggy Pinnacle, leads hikers through a “tunnel” of rhododendron to the summit which offers 360-degree view. This 1.5 mile round trip is an easy walk.

Books, CDs, souvenirs, and a photographic display can be found in the Visitors Center, and restrooms are on premises. There is no food concession.
